When it comes to staying safe on the road, you need to know you can count on your brakes. So it’s important to be able to tell when it’s time to replace your brakes or brake pads. Here are the signs to look for that may indicate new brake pads or brakes are necessary for your vehicle.

Signs of Brake Pad Trouble

Worn down brake pads are the cause of brake issues the majority of the time. You must replace your brake pads regularly to keep your brakes in good working condition. Here are some signs that you need new brake pads soon.

Squeaking or Squealing Noises

If you hear a high-pitched squeal when braking, your brake pads may be worn down and need replacement. This sound is actually caused by a built-in wear indicator that’s designed to make noise to alert you that you need new brake pads!

Grinding Sounds

If you hear grinding, it could mean your brake pads are completely worn out and metal is rubbing against metal. Don’t ignore this sound, as persistent grinding can lead to more expensive repairs.

Thin Brake Pads

You can visually inspect your brake pads through the wheel spokes. If they look less than a quarter-inch thick, it’s time for new ones.

Pedal or Steering Wheel Vibrations

If your brake pedal or steering wheel vibrates when braking, your pads may be unevenly worn and need replacement.

When You Need New Brakes

If replacing your brake pads doesn’t solve your braking issues, you may need a more extensive brake system repair. Here are signs that you need new brakes, including new rotors or calipers.

Burning Smell

A burning scent coming from your wheels while you drive could indicate that your brakes are overheating and need to be replaced.

Soft or Spongy Brake Pedal

If your brake pedal feels unusually soft or goes to the floor, it’s likely time for new brakes.

Car Pulling to One Side

If your vehicle pulls to one side when braking, a stuck caliper or uneven wear on the rotors could be the cause.
